What’s the difference between modern and antique diamonds?
Whilst modern diamonds offer serious surface sparkle, old cut diamonds scintillate deeply and draw the eye inwards. At Arielle Ratner, we're passionate about the way antique diamonds capture and play with light, which is why we've become an expert in sourcing them. We have an eye for quality and access to the very best of what exists on the market.
Diamonds are mined and cut by the millions each year, but only a limited number of antique cut diamonds are still in circulation today. These precursors to our modern-day round brilliant cuts have wider, more geometric facets, resulting in pops of sparkle instead of the disco ball dazzle we see in diamond cuts today. They’re perfectly imperfect, and that’s part of their charm.
Old mine and old European cut diamonds are the most common of the antique diamond cuts, and the history and technique behind them is fascinating. Diamond cutters in the 18th and 19th centuries were inventive in their approach, assessing every diamond individually and making cuts to bring out the best color and sparkle for each stone. The diamonds were meant to dazzle under the era’s low-light conditions such as candles and gas lamps. Cutting by hand and eye-balling the cuts meant that no two diamonds would ever be the same.
Do you only work with antique diamonds?
No, we work with modern cut diamonds as well. We have an affinity for antique diamonds for their chunky facets, depth, and hand-cut unique shapes, but a beautifully cut modern diamond can sometimes work better for design.
Are your stones GIA Certified?
Yes, all of our stones are GIA certified.
If I already have the diamond, can you make the setting?
Yes, we take on a few resetting projects a month. We love to give new life to your old stones! We reset heirloom stones only, not newly acquired stones. The diamond has to be pre-owned, have all the paperwork! Email info@arielleratner.com to find out more about our resetting process.
Do you offer engravings on your rings?
Yes we can offer engravings for an additional fee.
Do you sell men’s rings?
Yes! We have a small selection of men's bands that can be found here.
